Battle Snap: Tacocat supply the new Powerpuff Girls theme song, ‘Who’s Got The Power?’

Prepare for something containing sugar, spice, and everything nice — as well as a whole lot of ass kicking.

This week Seattle surf-punks Tacocat have debuted the new Powerpuff Girls theme song, “Who’s Got The Power?”, via a music video that shows Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup beating up villains.

This union of animated television and animated rock band is a perfect fit. Formed under the influence of riot grrl and punk, Tacocat are known for writing feminist tongue-in-cheek songs — see their 2014 surf-rock single about menstruation, “Crimson Wave” — and also tactfully address topics like street harassment and seasonal depression.

And now that Cartoon Network has rebooted its ’90s-born animated series about three crime-fighting sisters, set to premiere in April, Tacocat have stepped up to the challenge just in time for the release of their new album. Lost Time, the band’s third LP, and second for Hardly Art, is out April 1. “Who’s Got The Power?” serves as the album’s second single, and you can listen to it below via the Powerpuff Girls promo video.

Tacocat is touring in support of Lost Time and will play The Middle East in Cambridge on April 14 for an Illegally Blind Presents show alongside fellow Seattle band Boyfriends and Somerville’s Mini Dresses.
