Write You A Letter: Mayor declares January 15 as ‘Guster Day’ around Boston

Godsmack is so 2014. The New Year brings new Boston-area bands to be honored for time, skill, and service, and yesterday Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh declared January 15 as Guster Day in our fair city.

The veteran alt-rock trio formed at Tufts University in the early-’90s and will be honored for “the band’s Boston roots, and their commitment to the environment and public service.” The news is also tied in to the launch of Greenovate Boston’s 2014 Climate Action Plan, where Guster will perform at the Artists For Humanity’s EpiCenter. You can RSVP for the event here, but space is limited to roughly 450 people. [UPDATE: Looks like it’s already sold out.]

But fear not: Guster will also busk around the city at various locations on January 15, bringing their music and zero-waste mantra to citizens. Bring a jacket.

Says Walsh in a presser: “We’ve been working hand-in-hand with the community to create the Greenovate Boston Climate Action Plan. With this plan, Boston will lay out ambitious climate goals to make this city a healthier, more livable and sustainable city.”

In their 20-year career, Guster has been known use alternative fuel for tour buses and trucks. And as BoMag notes, “guitarist Adam Gardner and his wife started Reverb, a nonprofit dedicated to educating musicians and fans about green practices.”

On January 13, two days before Guster Day, the band will release its seventh studio album, Evermotion, via Nettwerk/Ocho Mule. Check out two of the more well-known Guster songs below, as well as the full run of dates for their upcoming tour.
