21st Century Boys: Listen to Broncho channel T. Rex in jittery new single ‘Class Historian’

Earlier this year Oklahoma’s Broncho got us all jazzed for SXSW with their hyper-groovy guitar-rock jam “It’s On,” one of the best road trip songs of recent memory. It felt like vocalist/guitarist Ryan Lindsey was riding shotgun with us as we rolled down from Boston to Austin.

But now, on Broncho’s jittery new single “Class Historian,” Lindsey has bolted from the front seat in favor of surfing the roof of our whip. The infectious track is the first taste of new record Just Enough Hip To Be A Woman, and gives us a good indication of what T. Rex would sound like if they were around in 2014.

There’s also bit traces of the Cars, Thin Lizzy, and Springsteen sprinkled along the way, helping establish “Class Historian,” with its retro guitar-rock shimmy and shake, as one of the best songs of the summer. Shit, it might be destined for Year-End lists, as well.

Turns out the Boston Phoenix was on to something back in 2012, when Broncho was named Best New Band in Oklahoma.

Just Enough Hip To Be A Woman drops September 16 on Dine Alone Records, just in time for the band’s gig at Great Scott in Allston the next day. Check out “Class Historian” below, with Broncho’s full run of dates, including a West Coast swing with Brand New, after the soundcloud jump.
