City Banquet: Boston Calling announces weekly live music Block Party series at Dewey Square

Boston Calling made news earlier this year when it announced plans to expand to a three-day event for its May and September music festivals. Now the team behind Boston Calling is expanding once more — into a free weekly series of live music at Dewey Square that will run until the end of September.

The 2014 Boston Calling Block Party Series kicks off May 8 with a performance by something called the Swinging Johnsons, and promises live local music and DJs each Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. throughout the summer.

It’s a bit of a remodel of the Downtown Crossing block party series that’s been around for a few years, organized by the same folks at Crash Line Productions, the team responsible for Boston Calling. This summer, however, it’s all being tied together and the music fest will select the bands to perform at Dewey Square — once home to the Occupy movement — just across from South Station.

For the Block Party series, Crash Line has partnered with the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District (BID) and The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy. All events are free and open to the public, and the lineup will be slowly unveiled through bostoncalling.com. A farmer’s market will also be open during the series.

“We are excited about Boston Calling’s creative activation of the City of Boston’s unique open spaces,” said Boston Mayor Marty Walsh in a statement. “The popular Block Party Series’ move to Dewey Square, where food trucks and the Boston Public Market already bring people together, will add additional energy to the square. It will create a new environment for friends to gather after work, and will make the Rose Kennedy Greenway and our whole city even more vibrant.”

Boston Calling returns to City Hall Plaza May 23-25 with Jack Johnson, Brand New, Modest Mouse and others. The September edition features Lorde, the Replacements, the National, and more.
