Lorde goes sinister for Hunger Games, covers Tears For Fears’ ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’

Twelve years ago Gary Jules turned a Tears For Fears song on its ass-end for Donnie Darko, providing a pivotal mood-adjustment that fit in nicely with its companion film. Now, Lorde appears to have given the same treatment to the celebrated ’80s English pop act, but instead of confessing to a “Mad World,” the teen pop star is giving a nod to her recent career course in “Everybody Wants To Rule The World.”

But unlike most people, she is.

The cover is part of the Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack — a star-stubbed affair that also features Coldplay, the National, Of Monsters And Men, Ellie Goulding, Sia, the Weeknd, Imagine Dragons, the Lumineers, and other notables. We haven’t heard the entire thing, but it’s giving us marquee flashbacks of famed ’90s soundtracks like The Crow, Romeo + Juliet, and Natural Born Killers. It just feels heavy.

Of course, nothing might be as heavy as the tone of Lorde’s re-boot. The songwriter born Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor needs about 180 seconds to take you out in her personal arena. The singer, who turned 17 just last week, performed live on David Letterman tonight; stay tuned for that footage.

In the meantime, here’s the full track listing for the Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack, which is out November 19:
