Smallpools newest tune “Passenger Side” nails a lot of summer’s sweet spots: Weekend festival bracelets slapped on your wrists, zipping over state lines on impromptu road trips, the ecstasy of basking in the neon signs of Las Vegas.
And yet, one detail stands out from the others.
“I could steer/From the passenger side/As you switch the song/From your cracked iPhone” singer Sean Scanlon proposes on the final chorus of the track. We’re feeling that especially — because if you don’t bust your smartphone in some fashion while on vacation, is it even the summertime?
The new song is our second taste of the Los Angeles group’s forthcoming EP, The Science of Letting Go, due August 4 via RCA Records. The tune meshes perfectly with the EP’s title, as it signals a bittersweet adieu to a lover by the last refrain. Conversely, another new Smallpools song, last month’s “Million Bucks”, seals in the love-struck high with a verbatim “give no fucks” attitude. When put back to back, they embody the duality of warm weather flings.
Peep the tune below and drop it onto your car playlist in preparation for the band’s EP release next month – just don’t drop your phone on the pavement in the process.
