Earlier this week we hyped the crowd-funding efforts of Boston synth-pop group Freezepop, which raised more than $30,000 over 24 hours to finance their new album. The number is impressive, but it pales in comparison to what Long Island hip-hop legends De La Soul pulled in via Kickstarter with help from their fans — a touch more than $600,000 from nearly 12,000 backers.
Now, the fruits of those funds are starting to surface. Last night, De La Soul dropped a surprise four-track EP titled For Your Pain & Suffering, and it serves as a nice warm-up for this summer’s And The Anonymous Nobody. The artwork for the EP, as Okayplayer notes, seems to suggest August 26 as a potential street date for the LP, but we don’t know for sure. The design playfully suggests an angry crowd demanding to know when the damn thing is coming out, so…
What we do know is the new De La Soul album is reported to feature guest takes by Damon Albarn, Little Dragon, David Byrne, and 2 Chainz, and will be the group’s first since 2012’s Plug 1 & Plug 2 Present First Serve.
