When encouraging children and teens to take charge of their future, few sentiments are more important than “you can be anything you want to be.” Say, for instance, a doctor — or Devo.
This Saturday (October 26), Boston Raising Powerful Musicians turns a Halloween tradition into a day of whimsy and empowerment, stacking cover sets from area artists to benefit the nonprofit organization. The “BRPM Halloween Show” will take over Somerville’s Warehouse XI starting at 1 p.m., welcoming a festival-worthy lineup that includes performances from “boygenius” (Evan Greer), “Devo” (DEVA, pictured above) and “X-Ray Spex” (The Jacklights and members of Doublestar), among others. In between performances, kids in attendance can get a moment on the mic via bursts of karaoke coordinated by Greer.
Founded in 2010, Boston Raising Powerful Musicians initially launched as Girls Rock Campaign Boston, but shifted to a more inclusive title last June. Funds raised at Saturday’s event will help continue the nonprofit’s mission of empowering “girls, women, and gender-expansive youths and adults to believe in themselves by building a supportive community that fosters self-expression, confidence, and collaboration through music education and performance.”
“Having a daytime gig where youths and adults may attend with their families/friends to catch a variety of music where grown-ups are joyful and modeling some of our ‘We Believes,’ such as ‘we believe in building each other up rather than tearing each other down,’ should create a pretty uplifting environment,” says Brooke Feinberg, a volunteer organizer.
Tickets are available in advance for a suggested donation of $10 to $25, although no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Grab all of the details below.
