Editor’s Note: How the hell is it already June? Aside from the fact that we may or may not have stepped into a time warp (put your hands on your hips), with a new month and nice weather comes even better comedy talent, and maybe a few less reasons to stay inside. So, while we keep searching for where the time and our sanity have gone, we’ll take the chance to remind you that comedy is continuing to do the Lord’s work by giving us something to smile (or groan, wince, or gasp) at. With homegrown talent, national headliners, and open mics galore highlighting the calendar, the plethora of powerful comedy throughout the commonwealth continues to show up, night after night. Enter Mic’d Up, our ongoing weekly series that details the best live comedy shows to consider as you head out and about. Below, find our rundown for this week, through Sunday (June 10).
Joe Pera at The Wilbur
For the amount of times we’ve seen Joe Pera just over the last two years, you’d think we’d get tired of his incredibly relatable and well-written comedy, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, give us Joe Pera every day for the next two weeks, and we still wouldn’t get sick of him. He’s really just that good at what he does and how he does it, that his regular return to The Wilbur is starting to feel like a hometown welcome when the Buffalo native comes to town.
JOE PERA :: Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8 at The Wilbur Theatre, 246 Tremont St. in Boston, MA :: Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 6:30 p.m., $37 to $47 :: Advance tickets
Tim Champa at Nick’s Comedy Stop
As one of the area’s funniest comedy exports, Tim Champa headlines the legendary Nick’s stage to not only put his own mark on Warrenton Street, but to also introduce us to his debut comedy album, I Need a Favor. So perhaps we should all pay it forward, and give the award-winning comedian a weekend for a king.
TIM CHAMPA :: Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8 at Nick’s Comedy Stop, 100 Warrenton St. in Boston, MA :: 7:15 p.m., $15.40 to $22 :: Advance Tickets
Mark Normand at Shubert Theatre
Along with his starring role in the new documentary Page to Stage, Mark Normand returns to Boston even higher up in the ranks of the comedy game than he was last time he came through town, with a brand new hour in tow to boot. Bringing new jokes, and no chill whatsoever, Normand brings his Ya Don’t Say tour to the city to remind us that “it’s just jokes,” and showing us that he’s also really good at telling them.
MARK NORMAND :: Saturday, June 8 at Shubert Theatre, 265 Tremont St. in Boston, MA :: 7:30 and 9 p.m., from $35 :: Advance tickets
John Cleese with Monty Python and The Holy Grail at Chevalier Theatre
As the living legend makes his way in our general direction, the sounds of the Flying Circus follow closely behind him. With a fun-filled night on the horizon, John Cleese will return to the area to sit down for an intimate Q&A session following a screening of the iconic Monty Python and The Holy Grail. It’s like if Jesus came to town to chat about the New Testament.
JOHN CLEESE :: Saturday, June 8 at The Chevalier Theatre, 30 Forest St. in Medford, MA :: 6:30 p.m., $49 to $254 :: Advance tickets
