It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: Blondshell at The Paradise Rock Club
Blondshell, the brilliant musical project from Sabrina Teitelbaum, is in town this weekend, opening for Suki Waterhouse on Sunday (January 29) at The Paradise Rock Club. But it’s only a matter of time before she’s headlining rooms on her own, especially with her self-titled debut album out this April via Partisan Records, the home to the likes of IDLES, Beth Orton, and Fontaines D.C. We first got hip to Blondshell last month, when we hyped ripper single “Veronica Mars”. Here’s what the New York City-raised, Los Angeles-based Teitelbaum had to say about it: “I was obsessed with the show Veronica Mars as a kid and I was revisiting it around the time I wrote this song. I wanted to sing about that childhood era when I was being exposed to a lot more than I was comfortable with. [The lyric] ‘gimme shelter’ refers to the song but I’m also saying please give me shelter from graphic TV and film, from New York City, overwhelming lyrics, etc. I think the song is just about having my boundaries crossed and the effects of those transgressions (for example, growing up to think men are hot if they’re assholes).”
BLONDSHELL + SUKI WATERHOUSE :: Sunday, January 29 at The Paradise Rock Club, 967 Commonwealth Ave. in Boston, MA :: 7 p.m., all ages, $32 :: Event page :: Advance tickets
Comedy: Laura Severse at Nick’s Comedy Stop
Don’t let the calendar fool ya — there’s a wealth of comedy options happening around the region this weekend, as Jason Greenough detailed with flair in this week’s Mic’d Up. But our laughs are headed downtown at Boston native Laura Severse holds hometown court Friday and Saturday (January 27 and 28) at Nick’s Comedy Stop. Look, we’re easy; we’ll go anywhere a “Dorchester Debutante” tells us to go. Greenough serves it up: “If you’re familiar with the work and creative force of Laura Severse, you’ll understand why she continues to be atop marquees all over the area. If you’re not familiar, well then, school is in session. The self-Twitter handled ‘Dorchester Debutante’ is back in the saddle at Nick’s for a full weekend her delightfully unfiltered brand of stand-up, and believe us when we say you don’t want to miss it.” Check out the “Medicated Townies” clip below, and tells us where to get that New York / London / Paris / Dorchester shirt.
LAURA SEVERSE :: Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28 at Nick’s Comedy Stop, 100 Warrenton St. in Boston, MA :: 8 p.m. both nights, $24.20 to $26.20 :: Advance tickets
Film/TV: ‘Crimes of the Future’ at The Brattle
There was a time when a typical Friday night out involved your own personal science fiction body horror drama. But times have changed and you no longer live in Allston, so your fix for all that comes in the shape of the latest David Cronenberg film Crimes of the Future, which screens tonight (January 27) at The Brattle in Cambridge. The film stars Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart, and our very own Nick Johnston penned a deep-dive review last June, noting that “Cronenberg’s return to body horror feels like a farewell to the genre as much as as it is a reclamation.” Here’s a breakdown from The Brattle: “Crimes of the Future is the darkly disturbing futuristic story of a radical, surgical performance artist (Mortensen) and his partner (Seydoux) who begin a dangerous relationship with a government agent (Stewart) in pursuit of a group of ‘radical evolutionists.’” Put some body horror fun back into Friday night, and appreciate that these days you can leave it at the cinema afterwards.
‘CRIMES OF THE FUTURE’ :: Friday, January 27 at The Brattle, 40 Brattle St. in Cambridge, MA :: 9:30 p.m., $14 :: Event page :: Advance tickets
