Neon Gold, the label that first brought us unfuckwithable forever faves like Charli XCX, Marina, Christine and the Queens, and others, has a new entry from an artist we’ll likely be hearing a lot from very soon: Emeryld. And that soon starts right about now with the Texas-raised, New York City-based alt-R&B performer’s embracing new single “Scandal.”
Out late last night (October 18), the hypnotic track examines and questions Emeryld’s natural pull towards what are are obviously and ultimately toxic relationships. “Scandal” will be featured on a forthcoming new EP via Neon Gold, and follows the summer’s “Bombs Away” single. A video has also surfaced, produced by Solomonophonic.
“I have a pattern of empathizing with shitty people in my dating life,” Emeryld says. “I’ll be like: ‘Oh my God, I know you have so much pain. You’re probably scared to open up, because you think I can’t handle it, but I can. I have darkness too. If you open up, we can connect’.” But, she soon admits: “You shouldn’t enter into something based off of a trauma bond. I’m romanticizing in my head and creating a narrative for another person of why we’re supposed to be together when we probably shouldn’t.”
