Blushing swirl around our dream-pop hearts with ‘Sour Punch’

New music releases in December often hint at something greater down the line — a leap over the holidays and holidaze to set a tone for what’s to come in the New Year. That certainly seems to be the case with Blushing, the Austin band who eye-rolled everyone’s tightly-wrapped Year in Review recaps and released a sterling new track in “Sour Punch” just before we all tossed up those OOO messages.

The timing allowed for a few paths forward, including a chance to fully immerse ourselves in the swirling dream-pop gem during couch season, and to look forward to the sky-gazing quartet’s sophomore album Possessions, produced by Elliott Frazier of Ringo Deathstarr and due out February 18 via enduring indie label Kanine Records.

A revved-up make-out song about the imbalance of a relationship, “Sour Punch” is the second track off the forthcoming LP, following October’s “Blame,” which featured Miki Berenyi of Lush. Not bad company.

“‘Sour Punch’ originated In the summer of 2019 when our lead guitarist Noe shared an experimental, crunchy chord progression he’d written, unlike any the band had previously explored,” the band tells Under The Radar for last month’s premiere. “He said he was watching the movie Clueless and was inspired to write something he could see being a title track to some ’90s teen rom-com. When the rest of us collaborated with his sketch, a snarky pop melody was infused and the result was a sweet and spiky blend of indie-pop tackling the tale of inequality and independence in a relationship.”

Our relationship with Blushing is just beginning, and hopefully we can give as much as we get. Fire up the Spotify stream or watch the colorful video below, and check out the band’s upcoming spring tour dates before the jump.
