Ah, Andre Ovredal. It’s nice to see you again after The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a decent-enough Hot January horror picture from a few years ago, probably your best since you did Trollhunter all those years ago (or at least Mortal). We had a whole bit planned where we’d make fun of your new film’s title, as you can’t call a movie Passenger and expect us not to go into a full-blown Iggy Pop riff. Thankfully, for everyone involved, we got sick of typing out “la-la-la-la-la-lalala” over and over, so you’re stuck with some plain-jane copy.
That said, this looks pretty swell. We’re automatically on board once the words “things go wrong for ‘van life’ people” appear in the logline, and we’re more than happy to see someone try to make a supernatural version of The Hitcher (RIP Rutger Hauer) with Melissa Leo. Paramount dropped a trailer for the film earlier on Tuesday, and it will make you wonder whether or not you should fly, surcharges be damned, for that Memorial Day Weekend getaway.
Peep it:
Ok, before we get to the synopsis, we just want to share the dope tagline for Passenger, which is giving old-school multiplex horror vibes in the best way:
“130 million people take road trips every year. 15,400 of them are never seen again.”
Paramount, the folks in your marketing department working on this deserve a raise. Anyway, here’s the synopsis:
“A few weeks into their van life adventure, a young couple witnesses a horrific accident that leaves the driver dead. Soon they’re being pursued by a demonic stalker who’s impossible to outrun and follows them wherever they go.”
Passenger hits theaters on May 22. Anyhow, now would be a good time to double-check your tire’s air pressure. You never know what demonic entities — or pot holes — may lurk on the streets.
