Normally, we don’t dig too far in the past for a news item, but given that this was a dead-drop at midnight on Sunday and deserves far more attention than it got, we’re breaking the rules for Lee Cronin’s The Mummy. Why? Well, Cronin earned that right by being one of the best voices to emerge from the Irish Horror Revival — all you need to know that’s true is a copy of Evil Dead Rise, one of the gnarliest, squishiest splatter pictures to grace a theater screen in the last few years — and because there’s a nice symmetry to an important anniversary for the director (and for us, too).
See, we were at the world premiere of The Hole in the Ground, Cronin’s debut feature, nearly seven (!!) years ago, back when it was a fresh A24 acquisition at Sundance. It’s really, really cool to see talented filmmakers succeed, and we really didn’t want this one to fall by the wayside amid an avalanche of SEO-optimized content about Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning to the pith hats for a fresh sequel to their similarly styled franchise. Plus, it’s creepy as fuck!
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis for Lee Cronin’s The Mummy:
“The young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace—eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.”
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy rises from the grave and heads to a theater near you on April 17. Make sure, whatever you do, that you don’t see this in 4DX or whatever without a rain poncho. You’re gonna be absolutely drenched in red-dyed corn syrup and buttermilk by the time this thing ends, and that’s definitely a no-go for the club or bar afterwards.
