In 2005, Augustana put Boston on the map as a locale for fresh starts with their (painfully ubiquitous) song “Boston.” But where do Bostonians go to begin anew? That’s the question Clara Kay asks in her new tune “Postcard Town,” a self-described “sailor’s anthem for anyone aching to disappear and start over.”
The Boston artist’s new single, which arrived last month (July 25), offers an idyllic snapshot of life in a garden variety New England town. Salt air wafts by picture book houses, church bells announce each new day — and a sense of existential dread is noticeably absent. Kay’s vocal melodies contain wispy slivers of Billie Eilish-style balladry, although the instrumentals painting Kay’s “Postcard Town” gradually broaden into a place cozy enough to call home.
“I wrote ‘Postcard Town’ during my final semester of college, when everything around me felt like it was shifting beneath my feet,” Kay wrote on Instagram. “On the worst days, I felt like I was drowning…so I bottled it all into a song and threw it out to sea.”
