You know, somebody needs to do a “man on the street” bit where they go into Somerville — home of the legalized polyamorous union — and ask some of the freaky folks what they make of this trailer for David Freyne’s Eternity. We’d wager they would find it pretty silly that someone might have to choose to spend eternity — the no-shit literal fucking afterlife — with one person, but hey, if you find out that you’re trapped in a bureaucratic heaven not unlike the one in Albert Brooks’ Defending Your Life, well, they probably have some goofy rules to go along with this whole “living forever” thing. Your protagonist is Elizabeth Olsen, who has to choose between chilling with her husband (Miles Teller) or her long-dead first love (Callum Turner) until, well…
Man, that’s hell itself if you ask us. Not monogamy, but the notion of eternity with limits, trapped with others like you’re in a middle school production of No Exit — that’s ripe for a fucking horror movie. Anyway, we’re sure that Freyne’ll handle it better than that, and it does seem like a delightful premise for a romantic comedy (the YouTube commenter who said “Rom-coms are back — we really are in a recession” deserves a medal). A24 dropped a trailer for it on Tuesday morning, and it’s worth a chuckle.
Take a look:
Here’s a short synopsis for Eternity:
“In an afterlife where souls have one week to decide where to spend eternity, Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) is faced with the impossible choice between the man she spent her life with (Miles Teller) and her first love (Callum Turner), who died young and has waited decades for her to arrive.“
Eternity will have its world premiere in September at TIFF, where we’ll probably be able to check it out and tell you how it is, and it’ll make its way to a theater near you at some point in November. No, they don’t have a release date set in stone yet, and yes, that is totally on-theme for this particular motion picture.
