CinemaCon 2025: Universal brings the horror with ‘FNAF 2’ and ‘M3GAN 2.0’

Universal
'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' still by Universal

Since we’re not on-site in Vegas to watch a whole bunch of movie trailers, we took a bit of a break from bringing you the CinemaCon highlights to mourn the dearly departed Val Kilmer, and because, outside of the news from the Lionsgate presentation that Keanu Reeves will return for John Wick 5, there wasn’t too much to write about. You’ll likely see the Superman footage Warner Bros. showed in their presentation at your local theater in front of Minecraft this weekend, and the descriptions of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride were as underwhelming as you’d expect. Leave it to Universal to actually drop a trailer for two of their big coming attractions — M3GAN 2.0 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 — after their panel on Wednesday night so that you have something to be excited about.

But what you didn’t get to see was new footage from Wicked 2, Jurassic World: Rebirth, Nobody 2, The Bad Guys 2, the Jordan Peele-produced Him, S0ULM8TE, Wes Anderson’s The Phonecian Scheme, and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia. Nor did you get to watch the entirety of the How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake, though they did announce that that sure-fire box office smash will get a sequel in 2027. Aside from that one sequel announcement, Universal kept their presentation focused exclusively on 2025 releases- no new news on Nolan, Spielberg, or Shrek. Read more at IGN if you want a deeper dive.

Anyway, stop mourning what you missed and peep this incredibly goofy trailer:

Here’s a meaty, very funny synopsis for that one:

Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules. Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; ‘Ahsoka,’ ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around. With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I bitch is about to meet her match.

M3GAN 2.0 hits theaters on June 27. Before you go, take a look at this FNAF teaser:

No synopsis. It’s not like you need one, anyhow, because your oldest teens will demand that you take them to see Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 when it hits screens in December. That’s right, theaters only this time around — they don’t want Peacock fucking with Freddy Fazbear’s money.
