This Show Is Tonight: Kestrels deliver a ‘Better Wonder’ to Allston

Just before the holidaze swept us off to sea, we took a shine to Kestrels‘ fresh cover of a Christmas classic that we didn’t know we needed. It provided a nice introduction to the Nova Scotia shoegaze trio, who last month released new album Better Wonder via Darla Records, and tonight (March 5) bring it to Allston for a tour kickoff show at O’Brien’s Pub.

One of the record’s standouts for us is “Free Forever,” a propulsive rev of fuzzed-out melodic noise that bounces off the corridors of jangly psychedelia and dream-pop. It’s a swirling torrent of emotion that should sound dope ricocheting off the cozy confines of the Harvard Avenue joint.

Here’s what Kestrels’ Chad Peck has to say about it: “‘Free Forever’ is about living with ambiguity in relationships. The verses deal with the doubt and hang-ups and unknown histories that we have to get comfortable with, both within ourselves and in others. The choruses are the flipside: Finding the comfort in embracing the unknown, recognizing control is an illusion, and saying what you want. Maybe there is time to make things right.”

No better time than a Wednesday night.
