When your body’s ownership is in question, don’t discount the power of a good twirl.
In an age where people view a dance floor as the setting for love, lust, or murder (thanks, Sophie Ellis-Bextor), Miss Geo envision it as a place for retaliation. The Boston group polish a political take for your party playlist with “My Body,” a shimmering commentary on life in a post Roe v. Wade world. The new single arrived today (February 2) coupled with a remix, marking Miss Geo’s first release since their 2023 release “Help.”
“Amazing — the world’s fallen apart,” Miss Geo’s lead singer and guitarist marvels with wry awe, reflecting on the recent onslaught of anti-abortion and anti-trans legislature in the United States. Electro-pop vibrates around her vocals, transforming a shaky political climate into a beat worth grooving to, inviting listeners to rebel by inhabiting every inch of their skin.
“The overturning of Roe v. Wade and the events leading up to it were crushing, as well as the multiple waves of anti-trans legislation,” the band tells Vanyaland. “This song about bodily autonomy was inspired and motivated by feelings of deep sadness and fear. But because of the darkness surrounding us, we wanted to create something joyful and upbeat that might inspire pleasure and hope on the dance floor.”
The single swats away the government’s meddling hands, providing an electro-pop antidote for hopelessness, albeit a temporary one. For Miss Geo, it’s just enough to recharge and start anew the fight for bodily autonomy. To borrow lyrics: “We’ll feel alive / That’ll be enough.”
