Emma Stone gets Frankenstein’d in the ‘Poor Things’ trailer

Poor Things

One of the things we admire most about certain filmmakers who hit it big is the movie they make immediately after that big success. Yorgos Lanthimos has gone through this twice now, with The Lobster becoming a surprise festival favorite and international hit and him following it up with the spectacularly fucked-up Killing of a Sacred Deer. Then he went to even greater heights with The Favorite, which robbed Glenn Close of another Oscar on its warpath through that year’s awards season. What do we get now? Poor Things, a bizarro Frankenstein twist starring Emma Stone as a lady brought back to life by a crazed inventor who falls in love with a lawyer. This is the most frightening of all fates, and Searchlight dropped a brand-new trailer for the film earlier on Thursday.

Take a look:

Here’s a synopsis:

“From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.”

Poor Things hits theaters on September 8, which means it’ll probably premiere at Venice. We’re really looking forward to this one, especially if it’s as divisive and odd as has been suggested (and all you need to know about that comes from the release date!).
