Don’t paint the ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ trailer black

The Insidious franchise is an interesting one — the first few installments were true-blue successes for James Wan, Leigh Whannell, and Jason Blum, but they were curtailed somewhat early by the fact that Wan essentially outdid himself with the Conjuring movies. It’s odd how much the series parallel each other, even when you account for Wan being at the helm of both and the presence of Patrick Wilson in both franchises. They’re overarching stories about intense hauntings, often centered around kids; both dipped their toes into the prequel morass once the original cast moved on to bigger and better things, and then returned, real-roots style, to the formula (and personae) that made them super successful to begin with. Hence, Insidious: The Red Door, which sees the whole Lambert family getting back together to finally confront The Further and all of its terrors that lurk within. Wilson (who also is making his directorial debut with this installment) and Rose Byrne are back, and we’re thinking audiences will probably come with them, at least based on this trailer that Sony dropped earlier on Wednesday morning.

Peep it:

Here’s a synopsis:

“In ‘Insidious: The Red Door,’ the horror franchise’s original cast returns for the final chapter of the Lambert family’s terrifying saga. To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before, facing their family’s dark past and a host of new and more horrifying terrors that lurk behind the red door.”

Insidious: The Red Door hits theaters on July 7, just long enough after the fireworks have ended for you to begin to thirst for the kind of industrial air conditioning that your modern multiplex provides. Hell, we’d see pretty much anything to beat the heat at that point, which is why August is the way it is on the release calendar.
