Watch this throne: Suriel and Termanology didn’t gain access to a $60,000,000 gothic castle on talent alone.
Heavy is the head that wears the crown, and weary is the artist who sacrifices their health and home life on the way to the top, as the two Massachusetts rappers explain on their new collaboration “Sacrifices.” Fans already familiar with Suriel’s story shouldn’t be surprised by the track’s theme; when we last heard from the Lynn musician, he was promoting his 2020 EP What Can I Say after a stress-induced seizure.
“I was working a full time and I was pushing myself to go to the studio for 40 or more hours a week as well [at the time],” he tells Vanyaland. “I was barely sleeping. I was getting, like, 2-4 hours a sleep every night for almost 6 months when it happened.”
Three years later, he returns with Lawrence hip-hop titan Termanology to tell a story of risks, rewards, and recovery — all from the comfort of the opulent Chris Mark Castle in Connecticut. Gathered around a stately dining room, the two rappers describe all they’ve endured to get a seat at the (very lavish) table, letting their bars fly as champagne flows and gilded candelabras drip.
“All in all, all the sacrifices we make, make us better in one way or another — whether that’s learning a lesson or gaining a result,” Suriel explains. “They force you to learn and grow in ways that you could never if you didn’t go for it or take the chance. The ‘Sacrifices’ we make, make us the people that we are and the people that we become. If you truly believe in what you make the sacrifices for, then it’s always worth it.”
