Gerard Butler hits some turbulence in the ‘Plane’ trailer

A lot of folks like to rag on Gerard Butler for whatever reason — his accent work isn’t great, he takes weird-ass projects, and he’s definitely past the 300 days (though that’s probably the stupidest one of them all) — but we’re huge fans of his work. Why? Well, over the last couple of years and throughout his partnership with Lionsgate, it’s become clear that Butler’s trying to save a soon-to-be-dead form of cinema: the mid-budget high-concept action movie. Look no further than his latest project for proof. It’s called Plane, which is the kind of goofy-ass pun we can get behind, and it’s about a pilot who is forced to team up with a prisoner, played by Mike Colter, to save his passengers from guerillas after a crash-landing. You might have seen the trailer this past weekend if you saw Black Adam in theaters, but luckily Lionsgate has uploaded the footage to YouTube for your at-home enjoyment.

Peep it:

Here’s a synopsis, though it’s not really like you need one with a title like Plane:

“In the white-knuckle action movie ‘PLANE,’ pilot Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler) saves his passengers from a lightning strike by making a risky landing on a war-torn island – only to find that surviving the landing was just the beginning. When most of the passengers are taken hostage by dangerous rebels, the only person Torrance can count on for help is Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter), an accused murderer who was being transported by the FBI. In order to rescue the passengers, Torrance will need Gaspare’s help, and will learn there’s more to Gaspare than meets the eye.”

Plane will hit theaters on January 27, 2023, and it’s hard not to be excited for some Gerard Butler action, especially with such a beautifully old-school concept for a two-hander like this one. We will be there on day one, and we’ll be doing shots of Pepto every time Butler utters a Butler-ism.
