Ayla D’Lyla draws us in to a darker state of fantasy on ‘To Be A Girl’

When we last caught up with Ayla D’Lyla, the rising New York City artist was drifting away through a lethal dose of alt-pop escapism in “Anywhere But Here”, channeling an all-too-familiar feeling of simply not fitting in with the over-capacity world that surrounds us. While that effervescent single floated a daydream to be elsewhere, D’Lyla’s latest, this week’s “To Be A Girl,” pulls back the curtain on why she — and a lot of us — wants out entirely.

The cinematic track ushers in a dramatic push and pull, where the classically trained vocalist D’Lyla explores avenues of self-worth, delusion, and all the things that come with being judged and assessed by others. “‘To Be A Girl’ is a letter to all of the girls who have lost themselves in the midst of a relationship,” D’Lyla says. “We often measure happiness by the romance existing, or not existing, in our worlds. Many of us tend to lose ourselves living in this state of fantasy and passion.”

Dive into D’Lyla’s world below. And escape with her if you must.
