Old Americana: Here’s where Halsey went shopping around Salem

If Halsey can’t have love, they want power — but maybe with the right spell from Salem, they can summon both.

Before performing at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield last night (June 1) for their “Love and Power” tour, the pop star and makeup mogul apparently spent an afternoon wandering Witch City with her partner Alev Aydin and their son Ender. While many celebrities keep their specific tour activities to themselves, Halsey shared a collection of photos from their trip to Instagram, adding the caption “haven’t been great at remembering to take pictures so I’m trying to make a greater effort to capture these little moments.”

While Halsey didn’t tag any of the shops from her travels, Salemites can easily string together clues about their itinerary. Forget that corny tourist pamphlet you picked up last Halloween, and allow us to present Halsey’s unofficial guide to Salem, Massachusetts.

The unmistakable tin ceiling tiles identify the second photo as Emporium 32, the Central Street shop that carries a ritzy collection of kitchenware, clothes, hats, fascinators, and general witch supplies.

The Frog and Toad-themed street advertisement in the third photo points to Wicked Good Books in the heart of downtown Salem. According to the artist, Shana Cuddy, the Essex Street bookshop has shown off this display since at least mid-March.

Wicked Good Books also appears in the background of another photo, which shows Halsey clutching a bag from Omen, one of the most popular witch shops in Salem. A subsequent snap also shows “Herbal Enchantment” bags of sea salt, myrrh, and dried herbs, which Omen keeps in stock alongside its massive selection of tarot and oracle cards.

Halsey also made her way to Hive and Forge on Church Street, where she picked up goodies from the Lowell-based company Red Antler Apothecary. The Hive and Forge employees might have been one of the few folks to recognize the singer, commenting “Thanks so much for coming in!!!” on her Instagram post.

They also grabbed a slice (and some cotton candy concoction) at Flyer Saucer Pizza Company, which fans of the sci-fi-themed eatery can identify by a section of the Firefly-themed table in Halsey’s final photo.

Of course, no matter how esoteric the shopping spree, no tourist’s visit to Salem is complete without a photo of the Bewitched Statue on Essex Street, which pays homage to actress Elizabeth Montgomery and her time in town filming the hit show’s seventh season. Hey, we’re all allowed to be a little basic sometimes.
