Watch Japanese Breakfast play ‘SNL’ before appearing at Boston Calling

Over its nine previous years, Boston Calling has been festival of moments. And as the 2022 edition comes up this Memorial Day weekend, we’re already thinking of the potential moments — a certain song, a certain experience, a certain run-in with an old friend — that might unfold across three days at the Harvard Athletic Complex in Allston. One moment that we’re very much looking forward to is hearing Japanese Breakfast blaze through 2021 mega-jam “Be Sweet” midway through the Sunday slate (May 29), which has potential to be a highlight of the entire festival. This past weekend, Michelle Zauner gave us a pretty great taste of what to expect.

Japanese Breakfast played the Season 47 finale of SNL, performing two songs — the aforementioned “Be Sweet” and fellow Jubilee jam “Paprika” — and Zauner participated in a sketch called “Women’s Commercial.” As fate would have it, that would be the last SNL sketch for departing cast members Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, and Kyle Mooney.

Zauner, who today was announced as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, brings Japanese Breakfast to Western Mass for an appearance at Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival just ahead of the Boston Calling gig, and returns to New England for a July 21 show at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine.

Get all the dates below, check out a trio of SNL clips, and get excited for the weekend.
