Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: Deftones at Agganis Arena
Each time Deftones come to town, it’s an absolute release. Tonight (May 13), the enduring and influential Sacramento alternative metal band rolls into Boston atop a spirited bill with French metal dudes Gojira and Vanyaland faves VOWWS. This Deftones tour was supposed to happen back in 2020, when Chino Moreno and the boys released ninth studio album Ohms and celebrated the 20th anniversary of iconic album White Pony. But we all know why that didn’t happen. Two years later, we all have some pent-up frustration, ready to unleash, including the band itself.
“I hate to say this, because it sounds very spoiled, but since I was 15, 16 years old, when we started this band, I’ve been able to express my emotions in front of people through music,” Moreno tells Consequence. “Whether I’m screaming or singing or whatever, I’m emoting these things. And then I’m able to sometimes go to bed at night and feel a sense of getting things out, this expression. And for not doing that for so long? It’s kind of tripped me out a little bit.”
DEFTONES + GOJIRA + VOWWS :: Friday, May 13 at Agganis Arena, 925 Commonwealth Ave. in Boston, MA :: 7 p.m. :: Event info :: Advance tickets
Comedy: Sasheer Zamata at Laugh Boston
The weekly comedy compass we call Mic’d Up points us in one direction this weekend, and it’s towards the Seaport. And that’s not just the magnetic pull of springtime leading us to the water. That’s where Sasheer Zamata holds court at Laugh Boston across two nights (tonight and Saturday, May 13 and 14) and three shows, bringing the SNL alum and Woke and Home Economics star to Boston.
Vanyaland Comedy Editor Jason Greenough breaks it down: “Zamata’s outlook on life is not only uniquely presented and relatable, but when it comes to delving into what some might consider ‘uncomfortable’ topics of the day, her clarity and ability to hold the balance between keeping it funny and keeping it real is something to behold.”
SASHEER ZAMATA :: Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14 at Laugh Boston, 425 Summer St. in Boston, MA :: Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 7:30 and 9:45 p.m.; $25 to $29 :: Advance tickets
Film/TV: ‘Friday the 13th’ in the Rocky Woods
There are a few ways to celebrate today’s Friday the 13th: Posting silly memes, getting regrettable tattoos, or seeing the movies that spawned the phenomenon out in the motherfucking woods. The Coolidge Corner Theatre has us covered for that last cut, taking us down to the Rocky Woods in Medfield for an outdoor screening of Friday the 13th Part 2 and Friday the 13th Part 3D. It’s not the first time The Coolidge has put an event like this together, but it remains a slashing good time.
Word from the Brookline theatre: “Coolidge After Midnite is partnering with the Trustees of Reservations for this highly immersive film-going experience. You’ll feel like Jason is lurking in the trees as you watch him wreak havoc on our giant screen, in 3D, next to a pond eerily similar to the infamous Crystal Lake. Do you dare to spend the night in Jason’s woods?”
Oh yeah, there are camping options available, too. Just don’t try to get freaky; you know what happens.
FRIDAY THE 13TH IN THE ROCKY WOODS :: Friday, May 13 at the Rock Woods Reservation, 38 Hartford St. in Medfield, MA :: 8 p.m., $35, parking and camping is extra :: Coolidge event info and ticket page
