Marc Maron’s stand-up evolution comes full circle in Boston

The stand-up vet brings his ‘Hey, There’s More’ to the Shubert Theatre this weekend for a pair of ‘homecoming’ shows

Marc Maron may not be shooting his new special in Boston, as previously intended, but there’s so much that tethers the legendary comedian to the city anyway, that it feels special whenever he makes his way back regardless.

With a pair of shows at Shubert Theatre this Saturday (October 12) as part of his Hey, There’s More tour, Maron is feeling a bit nostalgic about bringing this new hour of material back to his comedy birthplace. While places like The Wilbur and Nick’s Comedy Stop will forever hold a place in his heart, the Boston University alum is excited to finally get a crack at the Shubert stage, which holds significance for Maron, as he’ll occupy the same spot he saw Al Pacino in during a production of American Buffalo in the mid ‘80s.

The city that Maron remembers from his college days may have come and gone in many ways, but the feelings and memories still remain, as the evolution of his career comes full circle once again.

“The Boston that I knew when I was in college and just starting my career has changed so much, but when I go back to where I was hammering out 10 minute or five minute sets, or struggling in front of audiences while opening for local headliners in the middle of nowhere around New England, all of that stuff made me who I am,” Maron tells Vanyaland. “The comedy I’m doing now is the best I’ve ever done, and I feel very confident in my craft and my skill set, and there’s something kind of rewarding about going back to where it started and feeling the evolution of the stage I’m on now.”

He’s certainly come a long way since his days of doing sets in the basement club of Play It Again, Sam’s in Allston, but with his new hour, Maron is doing what he’s always done best. While he can’t really put his finger on a precise way to describe the set he has in hand, you can expect a little bit of everything this time around, much in the vain of his previous hour, Too Real

From his own personal existential struggles, to the social climate and weight of the times we’re currently living in, Maron has a multi-faceted batch of material that covers what he finds important, which he knows will make for a very exciting hour and fifteen minutes.

“If you know what I do, and how I do it, you’ll be excited about it,” says Maron. “It’s dark in places, and goofy in places, and it’s pretty honest and entertaining. I can vouch for it, and I worked hard on it.”

While his creative wheels continue to turn as we continue through the final quarter of the year, Maron has spread his comedic genius all over the place, as he can be found in so many different doses. From his still-booming podcast, WTF with Marc Maron, and his work on the hit Netflix series GLOW, to his appearances in Joker and Sword Of Trust, Wonderland, and even The Simpsons, Maron has been busy in 2019. Even with everything that has been on his plate this year, though, above everything, he’s loving what he’s bringing to audiences all over the country, and as he makes his way back to Boston, he’s looking beyond the shows for what he’s most excited about upon his return.

“I’m very excited to be coming back in the fall,” he says. “If global warming hasn’t destroyed it by now, I’m looking forward to feeling that crisp New England fall air and hopefully having the chance to walk around some of the places that used to factor into my life.”
