For the second time in as many Sundays, a spectacle played out on our television screens that seems more interesting after-the-fact than it did in real time. The 61st annual Grammy Awards were held last night (February 10) in Los Angeles, and watching it live offered little explosiveness. Yet, when approached in the morning after, there were some undeniably notable moments that truly stood out — not unlike watching a condensed, sped-up version of Super Bowl LIII.
The night showcased truly how the voice of women has grown to powerful levels that cannot any longer be ignored, from a should-be-headling-Boston-Calling Janelle Monae throwing down a funked-up R&B performance to an all-star team of talent (Miley Cyrus, Kacey Musgraves, Katy Perry, and more) partnering with the iconic Dolly Parton for one rousing tribute.
Drake getting cut off by the telecast for calling the Grammys an “opinion-based sport” was a drop maneuver for the ages, and Alicia Keys did an admirable job of hosting — and hoisting women’s voices — without resorting to cheap-shot humor or meme-hungry soundbites. It wasn’t the liveliest Grammys ceremony ever, but it might go down as one of the more important.
