Toronto International Film Festival: Six films you can’t miss

Toronto International Film Festival - High Life

You've heard about Widows opening the fest. You've seen the preview for First Man a hundred times. You've even started reading If Beale Street Could Talk so you can be the first on your block to talk about how Barry Jenkins captures the essence of James Baldwin better than any other filmmaker. Even then, you've barely scratched the surface of all the excellent films playing at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, which gets started on Thursday. We'll be on hand throughout the festival with reviews and reactions, but first, here are six films premiering at TIFF that we're super excited about.

Her Smell

After an extremely rare misfire with this summer’s Christopher Robin (which he helped to pen), Alex Ross Perry returns to a subject incredibly close to his artistic heart: Giving Elisabeth Moss hosanna-worthy roles in small dramas. And this role seems even more intriguing than anything they’ve done before — Moss plays Becky Something, the hard-partying front woman of a beloved ’90s punk band called Something She, and Ross Perry documents her downfall with his trademark wit. The rest of the ensemble is interesting, featuring turns from Dan Stevens, Cara Delveingne, Ashley Benson and Eric Stoltz, and the film also boasts stellar 35mm cinematography from lenser Sean Price Williams. We can’t wait.
