‘Mid90s’ Trailer: Jonah Hill’s skate-rat period piece looks good

Who would have figured that Jonah Hill would have the time to go out and direct a movie, much less an actually-pretty-good-looking movie about ’90s skate punks kicking against the pricks of the world around them? Not us! But it seems the Wolf of Wall Street and Superbad actor has done so, and the resulting film, Mid90s has been swiped up by A24 for a big ol’ release later on in the Fall. The prestige distributor dropped a trailer for it today, and, as stated above, it looks pretty intriguing and well-made, which we didn’t really expect at all.

Take a look:

Well, that definitely sent us back to the days of track suits and Eric B and Rakim and bedrooms meticulously organized by your older siblings, and we think it’s pretty fascinating how much love Hill has for this particular subculture. We, perhaps, might have expected this from Spike Jonze or someone with a more-obviously documented history within the skating world, but this trailer has definitely messed with our expectations. It’ll be a really fascinating double feature with Skate Kitchen to be sure. It’s been a pretty interesting year for the distributor, over all, and with titles like Never Goin’ Back and Hot Summer Nights coming out in the next few weeks, it’ll be well-worth watching them for further announcements in the weeks to come.

Here’s a synopsis: “Written and directed by Jonah Hill, ‘Mid 90s’ follows Stevie, a thirteen-year-old in ’90s-era LA who spends his summer navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.”

Michael Cera must be furious. Mid90s hits theaters on October 19.
