It doesn’t require a scalding hot take from Noel Gallagher to realize that British rock music is constantly losing a bit of it’s edge. Thankfully, we still have Blackpool’s Darlia to keep things sane, and today the rock band — who captured our hearts and mind a few years back with the ferocious “Dear Diary” — return with fists in the air and a triumphant new track called “Ballad of Black & White.”
The jangly, vibrant festival-mad song has us pining for the glory days of Britpop, before the soft-toss rock of Coldplay and Keane took over the country. “Ballad of Black & White” is out today on Ignition Records, and you can listen to it below via Soundcloud.
“I remember trying to demo this tune myself when the house was empty and it was too much for me to tackle at the time,” says Darla creative force and frontman Nathan Day. “Fortunately I then got to work with the producer Dan Lancaster which was when I realised he might as well be a fucking magician because he’s amazing. We recorded the tune in two sessions. The first one we kinda mapped it out and it was so unfinished I don’t think I even heard it back all the way through. After the first session I think he secretly sprinkled some magic dust on it or some kind of chilli sauce cos he sent back a rough version and we were all like ‘FUCK — that’s unexpectedly spicy’ and knew it had to be finished. ”
Darlia play a sold-out London Camden Assembly on March 29, and we’re still holding out hope for some stateside dates on our shores soon enough. In the meantime, swim deep into the majesty of “Ballad of Black & White.”
