Spring Fling: Rock and Roll Rumble opens submission process for 2017 edition

We’re nearly seven months since Worshipper were crowned metal kings of the 2016 Rock and Roll Rumble. Which means it’s time to start thinking ahead towards next year’s edition, which returns to ONCE Ballroom in Somerville come springtime.

And one of the more persistent questions about the Rumble — other than whatever happened to ’98 champs the Ghost of Tony Gold — revolves around how bands get selected. On Monday afternoon, Rumble organizer Anngelle Wood opened up the submission process, and details on how to be considered are spelled out on its tumblr page. The submission process runs until December, and interested bands can email rockandrollrumble@gmail.com.

Of course, there are several criteria a Rumble band must met, like being based in New England, having a web presence, and having released new music within the past year. And, as Wood tells us, bands are automatically considered when they submit their music to her weekly radio show, Boston Emissions on 100.7 WZLX.

“I did this last year as a courtesy to bands and artists who may not understand how it works,” Wood tells Vanyaland about the submission process. “I really want to give bands an opportunity to participate if they want to. Some bands don’t and that’s okay. The fact of the matter is that I want bands to work at it by proactively reaching out to Boston Emissions — this is something I have been very transparent about — but I understand that younger bands may not be aware of the Rumble’s legacy in Boston. It is not just some band battle. It is an institution. I need to reach out to them in different ways. I hope this is one of them.”
