The Passengers: Iggy Pop teams up with Josh Homme on new album ‘Post Pop Depression’

Just when it seems the world needs him most, Iggy Pop is back in action.

The rock and roll icon yesterday unveiled his new album, Post Pop Depression, and it's a collaborative effort with Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal's Josh Homme. The album doesn't drop until March 18 (via Rekords Rekords/Loma Vista/Caroline International), but the record's first single, "Gardenia", is already getting heavy love pats: Listen to the album cut and its debut last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The 68-year-old Pop seems revitalized by his new musical partners.

"A lot of geezers my age don't work out of their comfort zone anymore because once you become legendary you don't want people challenging you," he says in the press release.

On Post Pop Depression, Pop's band is rounded out by Homme's Queens Of The Stone Age bandmate Dean Fertita, also of Dead Weather, and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders. The core band that recorded the album will be expanded by Troy Van Leeuwen, of Queens Of The Stone Age, and veteran guitarist Matt Sweeney.

On his partnership with Homme, Iggy says: "I wanted to be free... To be free, I needed to forget. To forget, I needed music. Josh had that in him, so I set out to provoke an encounter-first with a carefully worded text, followed by a deluge of writings all about me. No composer wants to write about nothing. He got revved up and we had a great big rumble in the desert USA.”

Adds Homme: "This was to go where neither of us had gone before. That was the agreement. And to go all the way."
