Perhaps the best thing about Viet Cong’s new single “Silhouettes” is that it takes approximately three seconds to realize whether or not you love it. There will always be a market for dreary, ice-cold post-punk, and by now all the usual adjectives have ben spilled across every review of the Calgary band’s debut album, which drops tomorrow via Jagjaguwar/Flemish Eye.
Comprised of some former members of beloved Canadian band Women, Viet Cong dropped a cassette off Mexican Summer last summer — around when we regretfully missed their July show at Great Scott — and appear to make the jump to everyone’s radar with this new material, which hit on all the right early Factory Records notes (and, we’ll admit, that very underrated debut Editors album from a decade ago, which also aligned itself with the usual influences).
Viet Cong are about to hit the road for a fairly extensive tour of North America and Europe, but no Boston date appears on the horizon. That’s what we get for sleeping on Carl Lavin’s dirty work.
