Mean Creek go hard on upcoming Local Losers LP, offer up first single ‘Cool Town’

Mean Creek have entered their rebellious punk phase. The Boston rock band announced yesterday via Impose that their follow-up to 2012’s Youth Companion will be titled Local Losers, and is set for release January 28 on Old Flame Records. So to kick off 2014 we’ll have new music from both Mean Creek and (We Are) Augustines. That’s a pretty fast start to the New Year.

And speaking of fast starts, Mean Creek get the Local Losers ball rolling with a downloadable new single, “Cool Town,” and the cruising guitar-rock track is reflective of the entire LP. Song titles include “Johnny Allen,” “Mass. Border,” and “Teenage Feeling.”

The opening track off Losers, “Cool Town” begins at a furious pace with Chris Keene singing “Well it’s a real cool town, and wish I could move today.” There’s a bit of Tim Wheeler in his vocals, and the song reminds us of ’90s-era Ash. Pretty good.

“Cool Town” clocks in at 2:25, and the other nine garage rock banger tracks off Local Losers all run between 2:02 and 3 minutes long. It’s a quick, focused, relentless record — is Mean Creek angry, or do they just wanna rock the fuck out?

Grab “Cool Town” below via Old Flame, and peep some fall show listings.
