UPDATE 07.29.13, 10:33pm EST: Fat Creeps will be playing Wednesday at Great Scott, but it will “be one of our last ones for a while,” according to Mariam Saleh.
It’s Monday, it’s raining, and I’m feeling rather irrational. So please excuse me if this recent post on North Shore garage rock trio Fat Creeps’ Facebook wall doesn’t sound like some kinda goodbye. Just sub the word “hiatus” with “peace out bitches” and your cunty Monday will be just as ruined as mine.
HEY EVERYONE!! I’VE COME TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT FAT CREEPS WILL BE GOING ON A HIATUS, WE’LL BE CANCELING ANY UPCOMING SHOWS WE HAVE AND AM VERY SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE THIS MAY CAUSE ANYONE. WE WANT TO THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND YOUR LOVE AND WE COULDN’T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU GUYS!!
That sure sounds serious, even if “peace out bitches” doesn’t really work after the words “Fat Creeps will be going on a –.” Hell, the all-caps alone suggests something far more intense than a simple timeout, or a break for the summer, or that someone has decided to go to school in Iceland but will be back soon. There are the expected 20+ comments on that FB thread offering up the usual shock and frowny-faces, and no one in the band is disputing what we’re all assuming.
A private message to guitarist/vocalist Mariam Saleh was met with her usual cheeriness/friendliness but also referenced the band in the past tense, so I’m kinda bumming out right now. Not only was I giving a starring role in the Creeps’ music video for “Cherry,” where I scope out a hot piece of poolside-walking pizza on two legs, but I’ve been a casual super-fan since Mick Murray first played me their debut joint “Nancy Drew” a few years ago. Ennui-pop never sounder cooler.
Whether or not “hiatus” morphs into “peace out bitches” over time, some immediate shows are definitely off, starting with Wednesday’s gig at Great Scott with Metal Feathers, Brenda and Headband. Might as well go see New Order now.
So while the dust settles and we ride out this “hiatus,” let’s take a look back at some of the best Fat Creeps tunes. Anyone that listened to 10 minutes of my Boston Accents radio show on both WFNX 101.7 FM and the dot-com version should be familiar; a show rarely went by without some Fat Creeps in the mix, and my favorite track of theirs, “Leave Her Alone,” was among the show’s most-played songs. Check out all their jams on Bandcamp, including a recent split they did with ZEBU!
Here I am, pouring one out, hoping it’s not the end. Y’all had a good run, Fat Creeps, but it ended far too soon.
