You know the score: A new trailer for Dune: Part Three drops, we all “ooh” and “ahh” over how good it looks, and then we cross off another day on the calendar until we can actually see the damn thing. Counting the trailer Warner Bros. dropped on Tuesday, it’s happened four times already, and that doesn’t include the lengthy scene in front of select IMAX screenings of The Odyssey. Seriously, the publicity machine doesn’t stop, and while we’re here to follow it all the way down, it’s often pretty hard to write new copy about the same ol’ same ol’.
That was until we saw who co-wrote the screenplay with director Denis Villeneuve (good luck with those auditions this week, Denis!) — Brian K. Vaughn, one of the nicest dudes to ever work in comic books and Hollywood. Seriously, he’s the kind of guy to buy a random fan at an Image Comics party a brew after a brief conversation about his work. Ask us how we know. Anyhow, if you’ve never read Saga, the space-opera opus he co-created with artist Fiona Staples, now’s your chance. And, yeah, we think he’s pretty goddamn qualified to be taking on such a role.
Oh, yeah — the trailer. Just watch the thing.
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis for Dune: Part Three
“‘Dune: Part Three’ is set nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium. Now a ruthless Emperor, Paul must face the consequences of his reign as old allies return, terrifying new threats emerge, and betrayal lurks in every shadow. Haunted by visions of Imperial collapse and the reappearance of his long-lost love, Paul is drawn into a sweeping conspiracy, with Chani at the heart of its unfolding mystery. As rebellion brews and enemies close in, Paul must confront the true cost of power and the fate of those he loves the most.”
Dune: Part Three hits theaters on December 18. Hard to believe there are any other movies coming out on the same day.
