We experienced quite the range of emotions last week when Weezer and Pixies announced their co-headlining summer tour. You see, The Wombats were listed on the tour poster as the special guest openers, but the fine print brought some very unwelcome bad news: The British rock band — perhaps the country’s most underrated and under-appreciated act of the past decade — would only open the first leg of the tour, dropping off two days before it hit the XFinity Center.
“Fucking hell,” we all said. We could really use some Wombats action in our lives right now, even if it meant driving down to Mansfield.
Turns out, we don’t need to go very far at all, and the joy the Liverpool band is known to deliver arrives much sooner: Today The Wombats announced a winter North American tour, and the chilly jaunt hits The Paradise Rock Club in Boston on January 13. See all the headlining dates below.
The tour news comes with some new album news as well, as The Wombats will release Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life on February 9. The LP’s first single, “Lemon to a Knife Fight,” is true Wombats — an infectious flutterbug of a jam that takes up residence in your dome-piece as soon as you hear it.
“’Lemon to a Knife Fight’ came around after my wife and I had a huge argument on Mulholland Drive,” Matthew “Murph” Murphy tells FADER. “I’d been watching tons of David Lynch too, the song just kind of fell out of me.”
There it is.
