When you say “Big Dick Nick,” you’re thinking of Nick Foles running the Philly Special into the end zone before you get glassed by an angry Pats fan at the Cask. When we say “Big Dick Nick,” we mean Gerard Butler’s character in the awesome B-thriller Den of Thieves, which is essentially Heat if modern-day Guy Ritchie directed it. We are not the same.
But we do know that if you sit down to watch Christian Gudegast’s 2018 winter doldrums hit, you’ll have an absolutely fantastic time. Even better, there’s a sequel coming out right at the tip of 2025, Den of Thieves: Pantera, which looks like it will kick ass, take names, and swill Pepto straight out of the fucking bottle. Lionsgate dropped the first trailer for the film on Wednesday, and boy howdy, is it just everything we hoped it would be and more.
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis (also, it’s super weird that Lionsgate will only cite the work that Butler’s done for them instead of, like, 300):
“Gerard Butler (‘Plane,’ ‘Has Fallen’ series) and O’Shea Jackson Jr. (‘Straight Outta Compton,’ ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’) return in the sequel to 2018’s action-heist hit ‘Den of Thieves.’ In ‘Den of Thieves: Pantera,’ Big Nick (Butler) is back on the hunt in Europe and closing in on Donnie (Jackson), who is embroiled in the treacherous and unpredictable world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s largest diamond exchange.”
Den of Thieves: Pantera will cure your New Year’s blues on January 10. It’s about as good as one of those UV lamps people get to treat seasonal depression, and it’s a wonder that Butler hasn’t signed up for something like Cameo to spread his Scottish gospel of gruff and grit to those suffering through a dark night of the soul.
