One of the first times Shane Dylan spent time with future collaborator Kae, she casually noted that her favorite instrument was the violin. Dylan — a Los Angeles-via-Boston pianist and composer — made a mental note of the comment, filing it away until it came time to lay down a live rendition of their song “I’m Yours.” Like a gift, he prepared a string section just for the special recording, which would become the twinkling anchor of the pair’s new EP Losing My Mind Over You.
The five-track project — which arrived today (July 19) — is an indulgent layering of Kae’s glossy R&B vocals and Dylan’s jazz piano chops. Fellow Boston artists MonaVeli and Notebook P also lend their voices to the EP, but unlike Dylan’s prior work A Star or a Lonely Dreamer, which arranges constellations of local talent, Losing My Mind Over You specifically focuses on the harmony shared between Dylan and Kae.
“Kae has long been one of my favorite artists in the city — besides being a close friend personally, I’ve been obsessed with her voice and songwriting since I first heard her music years ago,” Dylan tells Vanyaland. “We wrote each of the four songs together, and this project stretched me creatively — it was a delicate balance between all the orchestrated elements and the rawness of the lyrics that speak about love and heartbreak. It’s some of my work that I’m most proud of.”
