Alex Winston chills with the undead in ‘Where My Cowboys At?’

Halloween may be in the rearview, but the supernatural still abounds in the zeitgeist. Those already longing for October and the return of the scary creature genre may let Alex Winston tide us over with the Detroit artist’s latest music video. It’s for “Where My Cowboys At?”, first released as a single via Rat Rizzo Records a few weeks back, with the video dropping on October 31 — just in time to guide us out of horror season and into the increasingly dark and dreary days of November.

The video, like many music videos before it, is set in a bar. From here, the concept gets a little more unique: Everyone in the bar except for Winston is a zombie. While the singer enters wearing her cowboy boots and looking effortlessly chic, her fellow customers and even the bartender stand haphazardly, mouths agape, skin green and gnarled. Winston is unfazed in the clip, walking around the bar, playing pool, and dancing like it’s any other day, even as the mildly decomposed corpses around her gnash their teeth and regurgitate guts in between poker rounds; as she puts it in the song: “It’s 85 and breezy in my head / And I’m dancing with the living dead.”

Winston says the track “is my ode to a period of life that felt like arrested development, knowing it was time to grow up but still feeling like a kid at heart. A final bow for my bullshit.”

Even if they’re intended to be less Halloween-chic and more deeply allegorical, Winston and her living dead dance partners prove to be an entertaining watch. The song itself, with its thickly-laid bassline and drifting lyrical delivery, is equally enchanting. Check it out below.
