We last caught up with sophie meiers over the summer, when the rising Colorado multi-media artist stirred up an alt-pop frenzy with “i was the right one”, part of a flurry of new music surrounding their ongoing “portals” trilogy. The series closes with the upcoming crawl__space EP on November 27, via Epitaph, creating a louder sense of havoc around the various “spaces” created so far this year with shine__space (May) and spark__space (August).

Propelling meiers back on our playlists and setting a tone for the new EP is the manic “hotline,” which dropped this past Friday (October 27) and is billed as a portrait of disruptive sickness, perversion, and self-destruction. It aims to create the feeling of being stuck in some kind of action thriller movie, meiers says, and arrives right on time given where we are on the calendar.

“I wrote this story from the perspective of a seemingly unassuming character who is actually wrapped up in some crazy shit,” they say. “They look sweet and innocent from the outside, but they never show anybody who they really are.”

Undeterred, meiers adds: “I want to talk about the parts of humans’ lives that we don’t begin to admit to ourselves — dirtiness, sickness, struggle, immorality, perversion.”
