ManRay goes Monday with new punk, metal, and death rock parties

Via the venue

Move over, “Sunday scaries” — ManRay has the Monday scaries, and these are likely to be way more fun.

The iconic Cambridge underground nightclub, which continues to expand its programming since its resurrection back in January, has done something it hasn’t done in a very long time (if ever): Filled out a weekly Monday night calendar. And they’ve enlisted a dark collective called The Orphanage to supply the mood and the sound.

The new slate of Monday programming fills the October calendar, and will run to the end of the year. The nights center around punk, metal, hard rock, and other styles that align with the venue’s goth, industrial, and fetish identity.

Among the new party offerings are Sonic Temple, designed for “black leather werewolves and vampire girls”; Wormhole, an all-vinyl punk night that launched with a one-off back in February; Unrest, a punk night with the brilliant tagline of “Sometimes antisocial, always antifascist”; and Burnt Offerings, a dark punk and death rock gathering.

The Orphanage is christening their rotating nights with a launch on Sunday, October 1, featuring the Final Gasp record release party, where the Boston death rock band will perform live. Yeah, we buried the lede on that one; ManRay is finally hosting live music.

“The Orphanage and the individual nights under its care came into being to give the black leather werewolves and vampire girls a place to sin,” the collective tells Vanyaland. “ManRay’s legacy was built by being a unique, vibrant environment for the kids who didn’t fit in and never wanted to. We just want to continue that. Boston has been losing its flavor, neighborhood by neighborhood, venue by venue, replaced by generic, soulless products made for generic, soulless people.”

It continues: “There’s a generation — at least — of kids who never had a chance to experience ManRay back in the day. It’s our duty and pleasure to pay forward what we were given so freely. The individual nights differ, but it’s all under the wing of rebellious, joyous blasphemy!”
