Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: No Hype Fest in Southie
We’ve been down with the roving No Hype Fest since its inception in 2019, when SuperSmashBroz (pictured) brought a brigade of beats n’ treats to the ICA. After a Covid break in 2020, the hip-hop and R&B showcase resurfaced at Ink Block last year, and returns stronger than ever Sunday (August 21) with a full evening of festivities at Artists for Humanity in Southie. This year’s slate boasts a host of Vanyaland faves like Notebook P, Neemz, and Cousin Stizz, as well as live performances and DJ sets by Rebel Mafia Global, DJ Dymand, DJ Slick Vick, Armani Alxndr, King Collins, and more, with SuperSmashBroz holding court over their growing gold.
NO HYPE FEST :: Sunday, August 21 at Artists For Humanity, 100 West 2nd St. in Boston, MA :: 4 to 10 p.m., $20 to $30 :: Event page and tickets
Comedy: Bill Burr at Fenway Park
The dude, he’s done it. Massachusetts’ favorite son Bill Burr headlines Fenway Park on Sunday (August 21), the first comic to top the marquee at the famous ballpark. He could get up there and talk about his role as Kuby in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and it’ll still be a riveting performance, but we’ll probably get something closer to his recent Live at Red Rocks special on Netflix — with a little bit more local flavor. Burr remains one of the greatest comedians of his day, a spot instantly earned after the “Philadelphia Incident” all those years ago, so this homecoming for the Canton native is all kinds of extra special. Thank god our city has more than one bridge.
BILL BURR :: Sunday, August 21 at Fenway Park, 4 Jersey St. in Boston, MA :: 7 p.m. :: Info page :: Advance tickets
Film/TV: ‘RoboCop’ and ‘The Terminator’ at Somerville Theatre
Look, we’re easy in this space. Give us an ’80s classic and toss it up on the big screen, and chances are we’ll flash bedroom eyes at the theatre. So we’re feeling especially flirtatious with the Somerville Theatre this weekend, as it brings James Cameron’s masterful 1984 sci-fi action film The Terminator to Davis Square for a midnight showing on Saturday (August 20), as well as two screenings of RoboCop’s 4k restoration, both tonight (August 19) at Saturday at 9:45 p.m., all as part of the theater’s Repertory Program. So we could technically spend our Saturday night cyborg-ing the hell out with both RoboCop and The Terminator, and that sounds just lovely to us as we look back at the ’80s’ cute predictions of what life would be like in an alleged dystopian future. Also, we’ve written a relative fuckton about RoboCop over the years, from so dive through that to make the weekend arrive faster.
‘RoboCop’ and ‘The Terminator’ :: Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20 at the Somerville Theare, 55 Davis Square in Somerville, MA :: ‘RoboCop’ at 9:45 p.m. both nights; ‘The Terminator’ at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday :: Info and tickets
