Zola Simone tackles love triangles in her video for ‘Easy’

Screengrab

Zola Simone is so stoked on the trajectory of her song “Easy” that she’s singing it from the rooftops — literally. After first appearing on laptop screens and TVs across the country as part of the Netflix series Atypical, the Boston pop artist shares her own vision for the single in a new music video, out today (February 14). The visual brings her fall 2021 album Now You See Me into even sharper focus, as it follows a teenage love triangle that does, in fact, include rooftop serenades and top-down car rides.

While Simone wrote the song specifically about Atypical characters Casey Gardner and Izzie Taylor, the video conveys a looser connection to the show, connecting the two projects through depictions of LGBTQIA+ relationships — or in this case, unrequited love.

“We wanted to incorporate and stay true to that while also making it our own,” Simone tells Vanyaland. “The process of the video was so seamless, it really felt so genuine like I was on a day trip with my friends — it felt authentic and real.”

You could even say… it was easy. Drop into the love triangle just in time for Valentine’s Day below.
