Every life is a journey, and it unfolds in a series of chapters that chronicle all the highs and lows we experience along the way. For BROODS, the New Zealand sibling duo of Georgia and Caleb Nott, their personal journeys are translating into their music, and this week release what is the second chapter in a musical journey leading up to their forthcoming studio album, Space Island, due out February 18 via Island Records Australia/Ingrooves.
The first offering arrived back in September, and the Notts welcomed us back to the alt-R&B-pop world through “Piece of My Mind”, a track about escapism that was accompanied by a visual inspired by b-movies. Now, the second of three chapters lands via the space-age psychedelia of “Heartbreak,” and it takes on a more personal matter as its themes are played out in vivid color through a video animated by Dr. Foothead (Adult Swim, Babe Rainbow, The Oh Sees).
“We wrote this from a place of determination. Determined to learn from the loss of my marriage and keep my heart open in its most tender state,” says Georgia Nott. “When I say, ‘Let your heart break’, I’m whispering to myself to stay present with the grief and transmute it into empathy. It was a mantra for me when I first separated from my husband. One of our parents would reiterate [it] to me daily at the beginning of my healing.”
Chapter 2’s “Heartbreak” picks up where the previous visual left off. It furthers the LP’s exploration of grief and its various dimensions, speaking boldly to the acceptance of loss, and how we often eventually find ourselves only after we’ve fallen into pieces.
“In the second chapter we step away from denial and into the darker corners of our ‘Heartbreak’. Where the things that hurt the most become a guide back to ourselves,” adds Georgia. “They become the teachers that help us empathize with ourselves, and through that, connects us to a deeper kindness for others. To let your heart break is not just a fearless and freeing thing to do, but a selfless act of love as well.”
