Fest Intentions: Moon Over Salem goes ‘mini’ for 2026

Despite venue-related challenges, the sun hasn’t set on Moon Over Salem.

Last year, the North Shore music nonprofit Moon launched the hyper-local music festival, which originally took up residence at seven venues across Salem. One of them, Moon’s all-ages space Moon Base One, has been largely inactive since February due to issues regarding the venue’s occupancy permit.

So in the meantime, Moon Over Salem is consolidating its footprint. Now billed as a mini festival, the all-ages event will take place at Cinema Salem September 12. Naturally, the lineup leans towards the North Shore, with acts like Bad Idea USA (pictured above), in/shreds, Cape Crush, and Cat Nap on deck, although Boston’s also well-represented. (Couch Sex, for instance, will hook up again at a reunion set.) More bands will be announced in the coming weeks.

“As Salemites know, troubles with our building on Artists’ Row stalled our operations this year, but we still want to bring underground music into the open and spotlight some of Salem’s best artists, emerging musicians, and the community who keep it all alive,” reads a statement posted to the festival’s Instagram.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Proceeds from the festival will be used for the Moon Rising Artist Scholarship, which supports “college-bound music and arts scholars from Greater Salem.”
