So, we have two thoughts on this trailer for James Watkins’s Clayface. First, we thought this sounded like a bad idea even when Mike Flanagan was going to direct (he still co-wrote the script and has a story credit), but this full-length trailer that Warner Bros dropped on Wednesday has us thinking that it might have… actually been a pretty good one? Second, the name “Basil Karlo” probably didn’t test too well, because, well, this Clayface is the ’10s incarnation of Karlo (the original) just with the second one’s name. If that previous sentence doesn’t make any sense, welcome to the wild and wonderful world of comic books. The MCU might have fooled you into thinking that they do, but, sadly, they remain as incomprehensible as ever, even to those of us who enjoy them.
Anyhow, this has some solid potential — who doesn’t love watching a person melt before our eyes, all because they wanted to have their looks and career back? We’re just waiting for the inevitable sequel, where Clayface goes on Botched.
Take a look:
Here’s a synopsis for Clayface:
“DC Studios’ ‘Clayface’ is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the cult favorite villain from Gotham’s rogues gallery. Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self… but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.”
Clayface hits theaters on October 23, and, gee, how nice is it to actually have some horror movies coming out around Halloween this year?
