In hindsight, it’s almost impossible to fathom how we missed the gem that is chrysalis and Entifan‘s song “carson.” The tune arrived via the pair’s May EP black sheep, which conveys the queer love story of two fictional seventh graders and a very real anxiety about being accepted.
Across five tracks, Entifan and chrysalis (formerly of Boston, now based in Nashville) weave a folk-rock entanglement between characters Josh and Carson. But middle track “carson” is the biggest heart-piercer of the bunch. It’s two minutes and 28 seconds loaded with a yearning beyond the narrator’s years: “I wish that you could be my wife/Or we lived in a different time/I wish we didn’t have to hide, have to hide” laments the chorus.
“In the time we live in, with the people in power, with the complexities of the world, discovering your queerness can feel terrifying. We’re constantly wondering: Are we safe?” reads a joint post from the two artists.
“We’re their voice,” the post concludes. And a wonderfully poignant one, at that.
